Sherlock Holmes Debuts Big, Avatar Still Dominates! Plus New Moon Sum Up!

With it being the week of Christmas the box office is destined to make bank! And that’s just what it did, this year Christmas day fell on Friday bringing in a record breaking $91 million, topping last year’s $75 million Christmas which fell on Thursday, making this year the biggest Christmas box office ever domestically!

Why might you ask about the big jump this year? Well one of the main reasons is because of James Cameron’s magnificent over-the-top action, adventure, thriller, and sci-filicious movie, Avatar which brought in an estimated $23.55 million.But, let’s not forget about Guy Ritchie‘s remake of Sherlock Holmes with the impressive cast consisting of Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, and Rachel McAdams which brought in an estimated $24.77 million. Another necessity for this record breaking Christmas was Alvin And The Chipmunks: The Squeakquel which brought in an estimated $14.5 million.

Below is the breakdown of how much each movie made!

  • Avatar — With this weekend being the second weekend Avatar is in the box office it only dropped 2.6%  from last weekend’s $77.02 million to this weekend’s estimated $75 million. Bringing Avatar‘s domestic estimated box office total to $212.26 million, with its foreign numbers topping $402.9 million, making the worldwide gross $615.16million! With the weekend numbers being estimates it is possible that Avatar can take home the No surprise there, this movie was absolutely breath taking with its gorgeous graphics and storyline.
  • Sherlock Holmes — This was the opening weekend for the mystery thriller movie, Sherlock Holmes. On Friday it took in an estimated $24.77 million, on Saturday an estimated $21.95 million, and on Sunday an estimated $18.65 million.  Making the film’s estimated weekend opening a total of about $65.38 million. With that being said Guy Ritchie‘s Sherlock Holmes is the new record holder for Christmas day openings, bravo! There aren’t any numbers available for the foreign box office yet (they’ll become available soon)!
  • Alvin And The Chipmunks: The Squeakquel — The Squeakquel to the very successful Alvin And The Chipmunks franchise opened on Wednesday bringing in $18.01 million. On Thursday it brought in an estimated $8.05 million, then jumped 80.1% on Friday bringing in an estimated $14.5 million, then had another 40.9% jump on Saturday bringing in an estimated $20.42 million, and finally sealed the deal making an estimated $15.27 million on Sunday. There aren’t any numbers available for the foreign box office yet (they’ll become available soon)!
  • Other movies also participating in the biggest Christmas box office are It’s Complicated staring Meryl Streep, Steve Martin, and Alec Baldwin which brought in an estimated $22.11 million. Up In The Air featuring George Clooney, Vera Farmiga and Twilight hottie Anna Kendrick which brought in an estimated $11.75 million. Finally, another contributor is Sandra Bullock‘s sports drama The Blind Side which brought in an estimated $11.73 million.

As of Sunday December 27th The Twilight Saga: New Moon has brought in an outstanding $280.92 million domestically, and $381.5 million in the foreign box office making the grand total $662.43 million! The power of Twilight fans sure is impressive!
